  This tab displays a log of all incoming, outgoing, and missed calls from the phone's native call log database. As you can see from the examples on the left you can choose to display this log in 2-line-per-item format or 1-line-per-item format.

The advantage of the 1-line-per-item format is that it fits the maximum number of entries on a single screen. The advantage of the 2-line-per-item format is that it display the greatest amount of information.

Unlike the native log, this tab in ContactsEx shows only telephone calls. The native log can be filtered to show only calls, but doing so a time-consuming process that must be repeated each time the log application is opened.

The format of the display can be quickly toggled by pressing the 0 key, or you may use a menu option to make the change.

You can also choose one of four formats for the primary information (which in the case of the 1-line-per-item display is the entire line). The examples on the left display the contact name with an icon associated with the type of phone number. You can also choose to display just the contact name, just the phone number, or the phone number with the text label of the phone number in parentheses. These modes are toggled by pressing the digits 1 through 4.

1 = Names Only
2 = Numbers Only
3 = Names with Labels in parentheses
4 = Names with type icons

Keyboard Behavior

The asterisk key will always move the highlight back to the first entry in the list, regardless of how long or short that list is, or how you ended up with it. Think of asterisk as the HOME key.

The right softkey will always say Back. Pressing this key returns to the Name Tab.

The up and down cursor keys move the highlight up and down. When you move up from the topmost item, the highlight will move to the bottom of the list. When you move down from the last item, the highlight will move to the top.

If you hold the shift key (which on non-QWERTY phones has a pencil icon on it) while you press up or down, the list will scroll one day at a time (no matter how many entries are in that day). This allows you to quickly scroll to any day covered by the present log. On phones without a pencil key, the shift key is actually #.

The left and right cursor keys are used to move to an adjacent tab. Right moves to the Names tab, while left moves to the Airtime tab.

Pressing the TALK key will dial the phone number of the presently selected log item.

The END key sends the program to the background and returns the phone to the idle screen.

The 0 key toggles between 1-line-per-item display mode and 2-lines-per-item display mode.

The 1 key selects the "Name Only" display format.

The 2 key selects the "Number Only" display format.

The 3 key selects the "Name and Label" display format.

The 4 key selects the "Name and Icon" display format.

All other keys have no function in this tab.

Unknown Callers

When calls come in from numbers that are not in your phonebook, most service providers transmit the Name ID provided by the initiating caller's phone system. However, on a stock S60 phone this information is shown only fleetingly while a call is coming in and it's never seen again. The call log database in the phone holds only the phone number.

ContactsEx however maintains its own database of Name ID information so that its call log can include this information long after the call has ended. This information can be identified easily because it is in ALL UPPERCASE and it often uses odd short-forms for longer words (since it must fit in a limited number of characters on most phone networks).

Knowing this information makes it much easier to tell who called you when you scan through your log.
