Signing the ContactsEx SIS File

ContactsEx comes in two editions. The first is the standard SIGNED version which can be installed onto any Symbian S60 3rd Edition phone. There will be no security restrictions and you don't need to perform any of the signing steps listed below.

If you install this version of the application, skip directly to the sub-section entitled Running the Application. Note however that running the SIGNED copy of the program deprives you of the ability to send an email from within ContactsEx. The capability needed to do this isn't available to a self-signed application. If you feel you absolutely must have this feature, see the steps below for installing the UNSIGNED version of the program.

The UNSIGNED version of ContactsEx can make use of capabilities not accessible to a self-signed program, but there's a catch. In order to install an unsigned application on your phone you must either have a phone that is hacked to allow this, or you must sign the application yourself for your specific phone using a free online service provided by Nokia. If your phone is hacked, just go ahead and install the UNSIGNED version, and then skip down to Running the Application.

If you need to sign the application file, follow these steps:

First go to the following web page using your COMPUTER'S browser:

https://www.symbiansigned.com/app/page/public/openSignedOnline.do

Enter the IMEI of your phone in the first editbox, your email address in the second, and then click the browse button to find the ContactsEx SIS file on your hard drive.

Recently Nokia remove the capabilities list from this page, implying that they now sign with all of capabilities turned on. However, if they ever change the page back and prompt you to select the capabilities you want, then ensure you have selected the follow:

ReadDeviceData
ReadUserData
WriteDeviceData
WriteUserData
NetworkServices

Finally, type in the displayed security code, click "Accept legal agreement", and then press send.

You should receive an email message almost immediately with a link in it. Click on this link and that will verify your request. If the signing server is working correctly (which sometimes it isn't) you should receive a second email message shortly that includes a link to download the signed SIS file. This can take from a few seconds to a few hours, depending upon the server.

Running the Application

The idea behind ContactsEx is to leave it running at all times. So, once you've launched the program, use the Hide softkey to put it in the background. To make getting back to the application fast and easy I recommend that you assign its icon to the leftmost position of the Standby icons on your main screen. This isn't a requirement, but the faster you can get to the application, the easier it will be to use. Alternatively you can assign it to one of softkeys.

ContactsEx doesn't consume any extra battery power while it sits in the background. It spends most of its time just idling and it won't grab any processor time it doesn't need. However, if its already running it will spring to life the instant you ask for it.

As it sits in the background it will be notified of incoming and outgoing calls, thus it is able to update the call log whenever that database changes. It is also notified of any external changes to contacts and groups, thus automatically updating itself in response.

Getting Setup

Once you have the program up-and-running on your phone there are a few things you need to setup first. For starters, you need to set your COUNTRY CODE so that the program knows how to deal with your phone numbers. The first step in assigning your country code is to ensure that there is at least one format provided. To determine this, press the Options softkey from the name tab and select Number Formats. Look to see if there are any assignments there for your country. If not you must add at least one. For details on doing this, see Number Formats.

Now that you have a format assigned to your country, go to the Formats tab of the Settings dialog and enter your country code (without the plus sign) and choose other options on that tab as per your preferences. See Formats Tab for full details. When the program asks you if you want existing contacts updated, say no at first, because presumably your phone numbers are just fine the way they are.

Once the country code is set, you might need to setup Area Code information. To find out how to do this, and to determine if you NEED to setup such information, see the documentation found in the Area Tab. If required, setup the area code parameters and once again say no when asked if you want existing contacts update.
