ContactsEx includes an over-the-air auto-update feature. You have the option of turning this off completely if you don't wish to use any data. The options for settings up the auto-update feature are found on the General Tab page of the Options dialog. You can get to this dialog by choosing the Settings option from the menu on the Names Tab.

There are three lines on this options page that deal with the auto-update. The first is labeled Update Connection and it is here that you define which connection you want ContactsEx to use by default. The list includes all packet data connections defined in your device, as well as any WiFi connections you have setup (even if those networks are not presently available). You will also find an option at the top of the list that says Always Ask. Use this option if you want to be prompted each time an update is performed, otherwise choose a connection that you can rely on.

The second option is labeled Update Schedule. It determines when (or if) the program checks for new versions. You have three choices, which are: Manual, in which case the program never checks automatically and will only do so if you explicitly ask it to check; Automatic, in which case the program will perform a check once per day; At Startup Only, which means the check will only be performed whenever you start the application.

If you don't want ContactsEx trying to connect to the internet without you explicitly telling it to, you should choose Manual for the Update Schedule and Always Ask for the Update Connection. However, if you have a generous amount of included data in your plan, then it's best to select a reliable packet data connection and set the Update Schedule to Automatic. This way, if a new version becomes available you will know right away.

The third and final option is labeled Update Type. This determines whether you get the self-signed copy of the program or the unsigned copy. You should only choose the unsigned copy if you have a hacked phone that it capable to installing unsigned applications.

If a new update is discovered during a check, you'll be asked if you want to install it right away. If you answer no, the program will simply abort the operation until the next time it checks. If you answer yes, then a new copy of the program will be downloaded from the server and it will be installed for you automatically (though you will have to answer the usual assortment of questions asked whenever you install any application on your phone.
