Phonebook Extreme

Download V2.3.0 Now
Released: 19-Nov-2007
Phonebook Extreme is a Java applet for Motorola iDEN phones (Nextel, Telus Mike, and SouthernLINC) that replaces the lackluster Phonebook and Call Log with something that will be the envy of all your friends. It includes some of the best features found throughout the cellphone world, including a few that can't be found anywhere else.

The program works on any iDEN phone with a screen resolution of at least 176 x 220, with the exception of the i930. Sadly the i930 does not conform to the same interface standards as the other iDEN models. Phones with lesser resolution (such as the i730, i830, i833, & i836) just don't have the screen real-estate to display all of the information.

30-Day Trial Period

The copy you download from this web page comes with a 30-day trial period in which all of the program's functions are fully accessible, with the exception of archiving your data to a PC. After the trial is over your application will still work, but it will be severely crippled. To unlock your copy you must purchase an unlock code for just $10 (US funds) using the PayPal button below.

The unlock code you receive is tied to your SIM card. You can use this unlock code to install Phonebook Extreme on as many iDEN phones as you like, but in order to use those copies you must have your original SIM card inserted in the phone. This means you can run copies on multiple phones, but you can't unlock copies for all your friends.

To purchase your unlock code, refer to the instruction manual for finding your lock code and then enter it in the editbox below. Next enter the email address to which you want the unlock code sent. Finally, press the big PayPal button beneath. You'll be taken to the PayPal web site where can choose to pay using your PayPal account, or through a major credit card (if you don't have a PayPal account). All information provided is seen only by PayPal.

Your Lock Code (see above)
Email Address to send UNLOCK CODE:

Please allow approximately 12 to 24 hours for your unlock code. If you don't receive one, please contact me at pcsguide@rogers.com.

Installation

To install the applet on your phone you'll need a data cable and a Java Applications Loader. Luckily one is made available for free from Motorola. You can get a copy of the loader by clicking here. The cable you'll have to buy from your local dealer, if you don't already own one.

There have been some problems using Motorola's applications on Windows Vista. According to information I've read in various forums, you can get around the problem by setting the application to run under Windows XP Compatibility Mode.

If you have any questions concerning installation, please send email to Steve Punter at pcsguide@rogers.com.

Request an Account

If for any reason you can't setup your own mini-server, you are free to request an account on my server. No purchase is necessary to make the request, as I want to get the full experience of using my software during your trial period. Just email me at pcsguide@rogers.com and ask me for access. I'll mail you back a username, password, and the necessary Internet address.

Changes

Version 2.3.0 introduces the following changes:

-        A new way to update the Recent Calls Log has been added. While it cannot get around the need for the annoying security prompts, it does reduce the function from 4 keystrokes to 3 keystrokes. This is achieved by having the program look to see if any changes have occurred to the native call log since the last time it was updated. If nothing has changed, the program will resume as normal, but if changes have been made, it will immediately begin an update of the Phonebook Extreme call log. Thus, you need one keystroke to start Phonebook Extreme and 2 to answer the security prompt. It also helps by ensuring that you don’t forget that new items need to be imported from the native log.

The new function is optional, but is set by default on all new installations. Those upgrading from an earlier version need to set this manually if they want it. The setting can be found with Menu -> Prefs -> General. Change the “Recent” setting to “On Resume”.

Version 2.2.9 introduces the following changes:

-        A bug was fixed concerning the Special Characters dialog. If the dialog was used in one place it would fail to work in another. In other words, the dialog would only continue to work on the place where it was FIRST USED. The dialog now functions correctly in all places.

Version 2.2.8 introduces the following changes:

-        When the program was set to 12-hour mode, times falling between 12:00 PM and 12:59 PM would erroneously be displayed as AM. This has been fixed.

Version 2.2.7 introduces the following changes:

-        When using the Export from SIM function, newly added contacts would not be recognized and subsequently they would not be added to Phonebook Extreme. This has now been corrected.

-        Also when using the Export from SIM function, deleted numbers from an existing contact wouldn’t be correctly applied to Phonebook Extreme. In some instances the wrong number is affected, while in others the correct number is removed, but you end up with a duplicate of a number that wasn’t deleted. This too has now been corrected.

Version 2.2.6 introduces the following changes:

-        Corrected a problem in which new entries added to the Calls Log with a duration of 0 seconds would cause the program to lock up.

-        Corrected a problem in which a log entry moved to a contact that didn’t presently have any entries in the Calls Log would cause the program to lock up.

Version 2.2.5 introduces the following changes:

-    The input type (between the two softkeys at the bottom of the screen) was disappearing after a few seconds after you entered the editbox for an email address. This has been corrected.

Version 2.2.4 introduces the following changes:

-        I have added a “Tag Name” field to Note and Address details. When a tag is included, the tag appears in the details list rather than the beginning of the actual Note or Address data. This is useful for example where you have multiple addresses for a contact and you wish to distinguish between them (such as Home Address and Office Address).

Version 2.2.3 introduces the following changes:

-        I’ve found an alternative to the Motorola-provided API for passing off phone numbers to the phone. This new approach removes the ridiculous 20-character limitation on the dial string, thus allowing the Calling Card feature to work exactly as it was intended. No more having to enter the last 1, 2, or 3 digits of the number by hand before you dial. Sadly the new API still doesn’t allow the # symbol anywhere in the dial string, and so for calls that must include a # in the touchtones, we still have to use the Speed Dial workaround that was in place in previous versions.

Version 2.2.2 introduces the following changes:

-        This is a bug-fix upgrade only. Previous versions of the software wouldn't necessarily detect a change when updating from the SIM if only the contact's name was changed. This has been fixed.

Version 2.2.1 introduces the following changes:

-        This is a bug-fix upgrade only. Whenever details were changed from the selective list of contacts generated by a Full Text Search, the contact list was saved with only the items found in the sub-list. Nothing would seem untoward until the application was shutdown and started again, at which time only the contacts that had appeared in the Full Text Search would then be present.

Version 2.2.0 introduces the following changes:

-        Expanded features in “Full Text Search”. You can now search for phone numbers in which the Free or Block attribute has been set. You can also search for all contacts that contain a Direct Connect number.

-        You can now choose whether or not to include Direct Connect calls in your Smart Timer. Even when you are billed by the minute, Direct Connect usage is accumulated to the second and rounded off only for display purposes.

-        Manual control over the content of the Recent Calls List. It is now possible to ADD, REMOVE, and EDIT details in your call log. The ability to add entries is useful when you receive calls from people who block their Caller ID, but you wish to have a record of the call. The ability to edit a detail is useful for many Direct Connect calls, in which the total time of the conversation isn’t known because your phone frequently considers the call complete when you still have more to say. The phone’s native call log only records the duration of the last Direct Connect volley that it considered a distinct call.

-        The last date and time that you communicated with a contact is now stored with the contact. This ensures that even if log entries for that contact have long since disappeared from the Recent Calls List, you’ll still be able to find out when you last talked with a specific contact.

Version 2.1.0 introduces the following changes:

-        You can now customize every single color used to render the Phonebook Extreme program (with the exception of the icons). You do this by creating a new Color Theme. You can create as many different color themes as you like and switch between them whenever your mood changes.

-        It is now possible to share Contacts and Themes with other users of Phonebook Extreme. This is done by sending copies of Contacts or Themes directly to the recipient’s Mini-Server account. They can send you Contacts and Themes as well.

-        To facilitate easy sharing, a new element has been added to Contacts in which you define the username and Internet address of the mini-server account for those people you want to share with.

-        You can now update the Recent Calls log from the Main Screen, the Recent Calls Screen, or the Call Details Screen. Simply press the Camera key in any of those 3 locations, or the asterisk key from the 2 log screens (asterisk has another function the Main Screen).

-        If you press any of the number keys while in the Recent Calls Screen or in the Call Details Screen you will be returned to the Main Screen and the key you pressed will be used to begin a T9 Search for a contact.

-        You can now designate numbers in your contacts as Blocked. This means that the program will append a *67 to the beginning of the number when it hands it over to the phone. The feature works with all local calls and with long distance calls dialed with just a “1” at the beginning. When dialing through the Calling Card feature, the *67 will not be appended.

-        When Touchtones are changed in an existing contact’s phone number, the Recent Calls list is updated to reflect this change. In previous versions of the program, log entries would become ORPHANED if you changed the touchtones part of a phone number in any way.

-        Some major changes were made to the routines that talk with the mini-server. You will likely find that many of the communications with the server are faster than in version 1.9.1. This is especially true of saving your data to the server, which is now about 2 to 3 times FASTER.

-        Modifications to the routine that update the Recent Calls list have been made to get around a bug in the phone’s operating system concerning Daylight Savings Time. You shouldn’t get any further duplicate entries with the time off by one hour.

-        I’ve also include a few carefully-chosen calls to the garbage collector to prevent the program from slowing down too much through heavy use.
